Safe use of nanomaterials
Nano-sized materials have a much larger surface-area-to-mass ratio than micro-sized materials which may result in different toxicological properties. Characterisation of these toxic properties requires the investigation of new endpoints, not yet covered by standard toxicity tests.
We have many years of experience in conducting guideline and GLP compliant toxicity studies in the fields of genetic toxicology, inhalation and reproduction toxicology among others. Our labs are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to offer custom-made study designs for testing (nano)particles. Exposure durations of in vivo studies vary from acute to chronic exposure, using various animal models.
For in vitro studies, we use well-selected in vitro cell cultures, for instance for human reconstructed 3D airway models suitable for air-liquid exposure to test atmospheres.
Nano-specific services
Nanomaterials exhibit novel characteristics requiring toxicity testing using customised endpoints. Our toxicity tests for nanoparticles are based on standard regulatory studies, which can be extended with specific endpoints at your request. We have ample experience in testing nanomaterials and can advise you on a smart testing strategy for your product with our extensive track record in inhalation toxicology, specialising in the (pathology of) the respiratory tract. In addition, we are equipped to perform in house physico-chemical characterisation of nanomaterials. We are happy to discuss the possibilities for a customised study for your specific needs.
